Rain or Shine: Golden Globe Style

Raindrops were no match for Globe winner Toni Collette's stunning sequins.

The rain may have ruined a hem or two, but dark skies couldn’t dim the megawatt star power on the Golden Globes’ red carpet, where our favorite actresses sported a mix of not-so-basic black, daring nudes and brilliant color under the umbrellas.

In the latter category, we loved Cameron Diaz in a red satin Alexander McQueen, Globe winners Sandra Bullock in a purple Bottega Veneta and Toni Collette in a glittery golden Elie Saab, and Glee’s Jane Lynch, trading her gym-teacher track suits for a gorgeous green Ali Rahimi gown.

Jennifer Garner in beaded lilac Versace and Nicole Kidman in flesh-toned Nina Ricci led the softer color brigade, and while Cher’s costume-y Morticia Addams look and Mariah Carey’s Herve Leger with TMC (too much cleavage) were missteps, most women in the black-dress brigade looked fabulous. We loved the classic and classy Sophia Loren and winner Meryl Streep (in a gown by Project Runway alum Chris March), Jennifer Aniston in thigh-high-slit Valentino, Penélope Cruz in lacy Giorgio Armani Privé, Halle Berry in curve-hugging Kaufman Franco and Glenn Close in a sparkly sequined black strapless Oscar de la Renta.

The stunning nominee for Damages (it returns to FX for season three Jan. 25) confided to us that morning at a press event for the show that she dreads the drama of dressing for the awards. “I get really angry that we’re made into fashion icons, which, you know, I’m not,” Close says. “I’m very lucky to be in a profession where people shop for me and put clothes on my back because I’m helpless at it myself. I’m very grateful that designers will lend you things or gift them, because it’s something I’m very daunted by.”

Presenter Sofia Vergara availed herself of that designer promotional largesse, sporting Chopard jewels and a blue-gray Carolina Herrera gown with crimson accents. “It’s not a color that I would have picked because gray is not very festive, but I’ve always loved her designs,” explains the Modern Family star, who wore her hair swept back and half up due to the weather. “It’s better to have it look fixed the whole night,” she says, “than have it look good for 10 minutes.”
