Just when our weekly workout schedule — two days of sculpting, three of salsa dance, a Sunday ballet barre class and the occasional circuit-training session — was starting to feel the slightest bit tired, love came our way. The object of our affection: Pilatesstick, a new class that’s offered at our local workout studio and is likely to come to a gym near you soon.
Developed by exercise physiologist and L.A.-based personal trainer Charles Blount, Pilatesstick crosses the affordability of a mat class with the diverting props of a private Pilates session. The lengthen-and-strengthen functionality of the Cadillac and Reformer have been whittled down into a 27-inch wooden rod, or Pilates stick, that is attached to resistance tubing and anchored over a ballet barre.
Our instructor prompted the eight of us reclining on mats to slip the foot loops or hand straps onto the carabiner clips at both ends of the bar; then he led us through a dozen or so traditional Pilates exercises — including the hundreds, roll-ups, corkscrew, open-leg rocker, teaser and side-kick series. The session built in an exhilarating “this-is-simple-omigod-I’m-dying-is-it-over-so-soon?” rhythm. Find a class near you, or purchase the kit ($149.99) for at-home use (it includes an instructional DVD) at www.pilatesstick.com.
