We caught up with Beth M. Howard, 50, author of Making Piece: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Pie (Harlequin, 2012), in Malibu, CA, at independent bookseller Diesel. Even before Howard revealed a word of her poignant story, we knew this reading was going to be way better than your average author appearance since it involved generous servings of, yes, pie.
The moment we heard Ben & Jerry’s was introducing both in-store and take-home frozen Greek yogurt, we couldn’t get over to the company’s tasting event fast enough. We love the rich creaminess of Greek yogurt with its health bonus of extra protein and calcium, so the notion that it is now reincarnated as a yummy frozen treat sounded like a dream come true.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus may not be the first to play a fictional female U.S. vice president, but she’s decidedly the funniest, and we’re thrilled to see her back on TV in a role tailored for her in HBO’s new series Veep, which premieres April 22 at 10 p.m. (Photo credit: Bill Gray/HBO)
It’s been 42 years since the first Earth Day, and what was initially a grassroots demonstration on behalf of the planet is now a global enterprise. Events of all sorts will commemorate the annual celebration, including movies and TV shows to view on Earth Day, April 22, and the anniversary weekend. (Photo credit: Courtesy Kelsey Stevens)
What’s (slow) cookin’? Just about everything, these days — from beef stroganoff and chicken mole to corn pudding and veggie risotto. We love the convenience of tossing our ingredients into the cooker in the morning, then enjoying a homemade dinner hours later. (Photo credit: Agate Surrey)
The truth is, we lie all the time: One University of Massachusetts’ study pegged it at two to three lies per 10-minute conversation. But what if you told such an enormous lie that you completely reinvented yourself as a kinder, more effective and more heroic person than you really are? Along with warmer weather, gardening, hiking and camping come the insects. We’ve told you about the dangers of contracting Lyme disease from deer ticks before, but experts say this year will be a bad one thanks to the mild winter we just had in the Northeastern and Midwestern states. It wasn’t until we saw a preview of the Finding North documentary that we understood the extent of the hunger problem in the U.S. So we took notice when the Food Network announced it would air a special called Hunger Hits Home, April 14 at 8 p.m. EST, part of a partnership with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger by 2015. It seems like it was only yesterday when we told you about a new shopping site called Gilt, an invitation-only site that would allow members access to online 36-hour sample sales of clothing and accessories from high-end designers. Since 2007, founders Alexis Maybank and Alexandra Wilkis Wilson have turned Gilt Groupe into a business valued at $1 billion and have expanded sales to include items for men, children and the home — and launched deal sites that encompass travel (jetsetter.com), food and drink (gilttaste.com) and city-specific offers (giltcity.com). The successful businesswomen set out to answer the question that they’re most often asked — “How did you do it?” — in their new book By Invitation Only: How We Built Gilt and Change the Way Millions Shop (Portfolio, 2012) out today.
