Wrinkle-inducing frowns are unfortunate byproducts of these trying economic times. Though a soothing spa visit may be just what we need, beauty treatments often are the first victims of personal budget cuts — especially after the holiday season. But turn that frown upside down because Olga Lorencin-Northrup, lead esthetician at Kinara Skin Care Clinic and Spa in West Hollywood, CA, has some tips for savvy “recessionistas.” Among them:
Do it yourself. For those who plan to forgo monthly facials in favor of treatments every two to three months, Lorencin-Northrup suggests investing in a high-quality home facial system, such as the Kinara Red Carpet Facial Kit ($145), to keep up your beauty regimen.
Read labels. Take a careful look at the directions on your beauty products. Lorencin-Northrup says she’s noticed that people often use too much, so cutting back on the amount you apply will help stretch your dollars. But don’t be a Scrooge — using too little of the product won’t work either.
Choose double-duty products. Minimize the number of products you purchase by using multipurpose concoctions. For example, hydrating cream can be used for the neck and décolleté, she says. Eye cream can be used as lip treatment and for very dry cuticles. And instead of using separate moisturizers for night and daytime, use only one — but make sure you never use a daytime moisturizer with sunscreen at night, since that can clog pores.
Do you have any thrifty tips you’d like to share with fellow recessionistas to get the best value for their beauty budgets?

I can make expensive face stuff last for a year! My last bottle of acne cream was bone dry before I threw it out–q-tips are your friends. I also use the paint tube method for creams and things that come in tubes–if I accidentally squeeze out too much, I put it back in like paint (daub the cream on the opening of the tube, tap the bottom to release the air, and the cream gets sucked back in) I knew there was a reason why i took art!
