Professional retoucher Chelsea Franks was on hand to work on photos at Friday's Estée Lauder event.
We’ve been meaning to update our head shot for the last couple of years, so we were thrilled when we heard that Estée Lauder would be hosting “Your Beauty. Your Style. Your Profile,” a free makeover event with complimentary photos. It sounded like the perfect opportunity — and a great excuse to check out the newly remodeled cosmetics department at Bloomingdale’s Manhattan location!
At the crowded launch event Friday, we checked in for our appointment and were immediately whisked past model Hilary Rhoda to a makeup station for a consultation with Derek Miller, Estée Lauder’s cheerfully energetic national makeup artist. Miller asked pointed questions about our skin type (combination) and makeup preferences (natural-looking, please!), then went to work.
After prepping our skin and applying foundation, concealer and powder, Miller created a classic look that accented our eyes and lips. To do it yourself, sweep a light-colored shadow, such as one from Estée Lauder’s Eyeshadow Quad in Sand ($35), from lash line to brow, then line the upper lid (Miller used the Automatic Eye Pencil Duo in Walnut Brown, $23.50). Soften the outline by applying a darker shadow over the liner and outer quarter of the upper lid, then follow with mascara. Next, apply blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend from ear toward nose. For the finishing touch, line and fill lips with a rosy lip pencil and dab a little gloss (we loved the Double Wear Stay-in-Place Lip Duo, $24, that Miller used).
Once ready for our close-up, we shuffled over to a nearby backdrop, where a photographer patiently coached us through a few takes. (We worried the Estée Lauder and Bloomingdale’s logos in the background would look tacky, but the fonts wound up looking so lightweight in the photo that they’re not distracting. Click here to judge for yourself.) We were pleasantly surprised by the fact that professional retouchers were on hand to erase blemishes and stray locks of hair. Not bad for a free service!
We received a complimentary 5-by-7 print and were emailed an upload-ready version for use on social-networking sites, blogs and websites (if you bring a USB memory stick, Estée Lauder will give you the larger hi-res file too). The next photo event is scheduled for Oct. 20–21 at Macy’s State Street in Chicago. More are planned around the country; click here for details on how to sign up.
We love the idea behind this event — these days, everyone can use a good head shot for their website or social-media profile. Do you think you’ll take advantage of this free service?

[...] By doing this, not only does Estee Lauder sell more of their products, they also gain new, very happy clients. When one of these clients uploads their made-over photograph to their Facebook profile, every one of their Facebook friends will see it (and the lovely Estee Lauder backdrop), and will probably want a make-over too. Word-of-mouth at its best! Read Vivi Mag’s experience of this campaign here. [...]
more and more good information. thanks.
