Cheer National Berry Month With Agua Fresca

Watermelon Strawberry Agua Fresca (shown here with shrimp and blackberry skewers) is a refreshing, natural summer beverage.

Watermelon Strawberry Agua Fresca (shown here with shrimp and blackberry skewers) is a refreshing, natural summer beverage.

Our decision to undertake a 30-day Bikram yoga challenge — meaning we’re in a 105° F room for 90 minutes a day during the hottest months of summer — has left us parched. In our quest to stay hydrated, we discovered the following recipe from Driscoll’s for Watermelon Strawberry Agua Fresca. Refreshing agua fresca originated in Mexico, and usually is a simple blend of water, sugar and fruits, though sometimes seeds or grains are included, as with horchata, which contains rice.

Studies have shown that watermelon can lift libido, but we tend to associate the fruit with family picnics and other nonromantic settings. Strawberries contain potassium and beneficial antioxidants, such as vitamin C. July happens to be National Berry Month, so check out Driscoll’s website for other refreshing berry recipes such as Blackberry Gazpacho and Skewered Shrimp and Blackberries With Sesame Ginger Marinade (shown).

Watermelon Strawberry Agua Fresca

1 package (6 ounces) strawberries, hulled and chilled
2  cups seedless (or seeds removed) watermelon cubes
1/3 cup lime juice (from about 2–3 limes)
2  tablespoons granulated sugar

Blend strawberries, watermelon and lime juice until smooth. Add sugar to taste. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Pour over ice if desired. Insert a lime wedge and strawberry on a cocktail pick for garnish. To lighten the recipe, use sugar substitute in place of sugar.

Makes 6 servings.
