The more things change, the more they stay the same. At least, that seemed to be the mantra as the Spring 2012 shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week came to a close. While some designers continued down the path of least resistance, others shook things up by taking a contrasting approach to their usual aesthetics.
We’ve practiced yoga in some of New York City’s most bustling places: Solstice in Times Square, Yoga on the Great Lawn and, most recently, Salutation Nation in Central Park. But we were impressed with the concentration and serenity displayed by yoga power couple Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman Yee and the 20 yogis in the Barclay’s Capital Grove at Lincoln Center during the unveiling of the LI-NING X Vivienne Tam Fashion Yoga Collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Tam teamed up with former Chinese Olympic gymnast Li Ning’s sportswear company to create the line of eco-friendly, fashionable and functional yogawear for women.
During Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, we got the chance to peek backstage and check out some of the runway hair styled by Aveda. While the spring/summer 2012 collections are obviously the focus on the runway, the ‘dos kept with the overall mood of the shows and drew inspiration from a variety of places — from St. Tropez to Amish country.
Now that we’ve reached the halfway point of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City, some clear trends are emerging as frontrunners this spring. With enough strong options to suit a variety of tastes, we think you’ll like what’s in store!
When attending Fashion’s Night Out, we love being surrounded by the positive energy and excitement of people who adore fashion and shopping. American Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America and NYC & Company co-host the worldwide event, which was created in 2009 as an effort to boost the fashion industry’s economy with a fun night of shopping before Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City. The third annual Fashion’s Night Out on Sept. 8 will be the biggest yet, with more digital events than in previous years, so the sartorial set can participate from anywhere.

In our minds, the late Alexander McQueen will forever be an iconic figure, unafraid to be different and adept at producing truly artistic fashion. So it’s no surprise that the retrospective of his life’s work as a designer, entitled “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City set an attendance record for a fashion exhibition at the Met, drawing more than 582,000 viewers since its May opening. We recently toured the special exhibition, which is coming to a close August 7, and think it’s worth the long wait in line.
