We try to make our wellness a priority, but with work deadlines creeping up on us, meetings to plan and a family to take care of, our health often ends up on the back burner. To combat this “me-second” mentality, we plan to celebrate National Women’s Health Week, going on through May 15. This year’s theme, “It’s Your Time,” reminds us to carve out a few minutes to schedule our yearly health exams — and to reassess our nutrition and fitness goals!

How do you express gratitude to someone who’s always given you unconditional love and support? A single day isn’t nearly enough to thank mothers for everything they do for us. But we don’t stress out too much on Mother’s Day gifts — after all, this is the woman who once cooed over our hand-outline turkey made in grade school and graciously thanked us when we presented her with a handful of dandelions. Frankly, we’re a little tired of hearing people say things like “30 is the new 20” and “40 is the new 30.” So we love the title of Suzanne Braun Levine’s new book: 50 Is the New Fifty (Plume, 2010). As the first editor of Ms. magazine, Levine is no stranger to inviting discussion on women and aging, coining the term “second adulthood” for women over 50 in Inventing the Rest of Our Lives (Plume, 2005). In her latest book, Levine promises 10 life lessons, delivering inspiration with wisdom, honesty and humor, and drawing upon stories of her own, as well as tales and quotes shared by other women — including Helen Mirren, Gloria Steinem and Marlo Thomas. Our favorite tidbit is from author Madeleine L’Engle: “The great thing about getting older, is that you don’t have to lose all the other ages you’ve been.” To this, Levine adds, “We are at a point where our lives are finally beginning to add up.”

It’s been almost 15 years since we hosted our first Cinco de Mayo get-together, which, for us, is more of a celebration of good friends and warm weather than a reflection upon the Mexicans’ surprise win over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. We typically make Mexican and Tex-Mex food — and mix some cocktails, of course. But for a twist on the usual margaritas and sangria, we thought we’d try to stir things up with Rosangel, the new Gran Centenario Reposado Tequila.

Earth Month may be over, but the principles behind its celebration are part of our everyday lifestyle.
