Playing Doctor: Private Practice Sneak Peek

When we last saw the doctors of ABC’s Private Practice in the second season’s cliffhanger finale, crisis was the operative word. Kate Walsh’s Addison had called it quits with her married man (and delivered his wife’s baby), Audra McDonald’s Naomi was threatening to leave the practice for the rival clinic downstairs, and Amy Brenneman’s pregnant Violet was menaced by a deranged knife-wielding patient intent on stealing her baby. The drama continues on tomorrow’s third-season premiere.

A Starbucks may sit lightly on our desk, but heavy upon our conscience after watching No Impact Man, the documentary that chronicles author Colin Beavan’s year of living in Manhattan with his wife, Michelle Conlin, and 2-year-old daughter, Isabella, with the smallest environmental footprint possible. The film by Laura Gabbert and Justin Schein is being shown in select cities and will continue to open in theaters across the country throughout October and November. Beavan and his family forsake many conveniences — including takeout, nonlocal food, transportation and eventually electricity — as the nonfiction writer documents the experiment on a blog and for his recently released book, No Impact Man (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2009). Michael Kors Very Hollywood Brings Back a Classic

Our mother’s extensive jewelry collection included several solid-perfume rings that she purchased from Avon in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As a little girl, we were fascinated with the way the jewel top unclasped to reveal the fragrance hidden inside. So when we discovered that Michael Kors would be offering his new fragrance, Very Hollywood, in a solid-perfume cocktail ring ($40) at Sephora, we instantly wanted one. That was even before we were captivated by the subtly sexy scent — classic glamour of old Hollywood captured in a bottle. (Or a ring.)

September generally kicks off an onslaught of biopics, but we have to wonder what the mission is of these autumn perennials. To educate? To reveal a previously unknown side? To feed longtime fans’ obsessions? Or merely to present highbrow fodder for awards ceremonies? The French-language Coco Before Chanel, opening in select theaters today, stars Audrey Tautou (Amélie, The Da Vinci Code) as Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, one of the most influential figures in 20th-century fashion. As the title indicates, the film is concerned with the pre-fame portion of her life as it traces her humble beginnings in an orphanage to her nightly cabaret performances and finally into a quasi-love triangle between a wealthy horse breeder and a British businessman.

Friend Moves to Cougar Town

Fifteen years since she first made us laugh as the neurotically lovable Monica on Friends, Courteney Cox is back in the comedy game as a divorced mom on the dating scene in the new ABC sitcom Cougar Town, which premiered last night. Cox says her Realtor character Jules Cobb “is totally me,” and that she loves the physical-comedy aspect of the show. The wardrobe is a departure for her, though. “I never thought of myself as someone wearing bright colors, but this is set in Florida,” explains the actor, who in real life favors more muted, classic colors and pieces like the head-to-toe Marc Jacobs outfit she sported when we bumped into her.

Emmy Style: The Suite Life

Red-carpet glamour isn’t the only reason we look forward to the Emmys every year. In the days leading up to the event, we also make the rounds at the style suites — where celebrities and their stylists indulge in pampering treatments and collect goodies to help them get ready for the big night. Among our stops last week: The Interior Illusions Style Lounge in West Hollywood, which featured Napoleon Perdis cosmetics, You by Crocs shoes, Lucky Owl soy candles and Greenerpup dog beds.

Flex Time: 3 Pilates-Friendly Getaways

We believe in reformers — Pilates reformers, that is. (And cadillacs, too; not the kind you drive, the ones you find in a Pilates studio.) Years ago, we discovered our first Pilates-friendly vacation spot when we visited the The Royal Playa del Carmen, a beachfront resort south of Cancún, Mexico. The all-inclusive price for our sumptuous junior suite included meals at any of the resort’s seven restaurants, room service, in-room cocktail bar and a fitness center offering cycling classes, weights and as many group Pilates reformer classes our muscles could stomach.

We’ve been told we type loudly — we blame our heavy fingers on learning to type on a manual typewriter. Though we may never thoroughly adjust to touch screens and laptop keyboards, our fingers no longer hurt after a lot of typing. However, extended time in front of the computer can cause new issues, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, which women are three times more likely to develop than men. We’ve seen the typical wrist rests and cushions, but we were intrigued by the iBracelet ($10.99) from Wellgate for Women, which specializes in women-specific pain-relief products, such as wrist, ankle and knee supports. The support looks like a bracelet of large beads — available in white pearl, black pearl or violet — but is made of a soft, pliable material.
