Our decision to undertake a 30-day Bikram yoga challenge — meaning we’re in a 105° F room for 90 minutes a day during the hottest months of summer — has left us parched. In our quest to stay hydrated, we discovered the following recipe from Driscoll’s for Watermelon Strawberry Agua Fresca. Refreshing agua fresca originated in Mexico, and usually is a simple blend of water, sugar and fruits, though sometimes seeds or grains are included, as with horchata, which contains rice.

While reading Lynn Taylor’s Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job (John Wiley & Sons, 2009), we realized how fortunate we are to have had so few bad bosses throughout our career. The author, CEO of Lynn Taylor Consulting — where she deals with workplace management issues — notes in the book’s introduction that while no boss is perfect, there are many who behave in childish ways. A mother of two boys, Taylor says, “I saw striking parallels between troublesome bosses and toddlers — and not surprisingly, the solutions were frequently very similar as well.”

Hairstylists launch product lines these days as frequently as dermatologists put their names on sunscreens and serums. Any stylist who has ever touched the head of a celebrity, from Ken Paves (Jessica Simpson), Chris McMillan (Jennifer Aniston), Oribe (Jennifer Lopez) and, of course, Frédéric Fekkai (everybody else), is selling shampoo, conditioner and styling elixir that promise to deliver red-carpet hair. The latest to enter this crowded market is Umberto — for the record, his surname is Savone — whose celebrity clients include Janet Jackson and Christina Applegate.

When we first spied Mary Fanaro’s OmniPeace T-shirts last year, we immediately snapped one up in support of her organization’s efforts to eliminate poverty by 2025 and promote peace, education and human rights. Now OmniPeace has a new line of tees devoted to raising awareness of violence against women and girls in the Congo. Having befriended survivors of the Sudanese genocide in our hometown, we are motivated to do whatever we can do to help out — including donning one of these tees.

We’re always curious where fashion designers find their inspiration, and apparently we’re not alone. So when we heard that Isaac Mizrahi, whose Bravo program The Fashion Show just wrapped up its first season last night, was curating the Summer Pictures group show at the Julie Saul Gallery in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, we knew we’d find a variety of fascinating pieces — as we’ve come to expect from him on the runway.

We’ve been seeing quite a few studies about the benefits of vegetarian diets — in fact, British researchers recently reported that vegetarians are 12 percent less likely to develop cancer than meat eaters. So it’s not surprising that the recently updated position statement from the American Dietetic Association on vegetarian diets says that well-planned vegetarian and vegan diets are healthful and can help to prevent and treat chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity.

If you’re like us, you’ve been personally touched by breast cancer on one level or another — and every time the disease hits a bit closer to home, we become even more determined to unearth reliable ways to reduce our risks. Of course, we already know that exercise is an important aspect of any cancer-prevention program, but we didn’t realize just how simple meeting our weekly goal might be. Specifically: A new study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual meeting in Seattle stated that exercising for a mere hour a week after the age of 30 can help cut a woman’s chances of developing breast cancer.
