March 2009 Archive

Although we’ve already shared with you some of the great runway styles we saw during New York Fashion Week, our thoughts recently turned to a show far from Bryant Park. The first Aspen Fashion Week had the streets of the tony Colorado ski resort abuzz about trends in ski and snowboard wear for next fall and winter.

Bulgari Launches Gem Essence Skin Care

When we heard Bulgari — purveyor of fine jewelry for more than a century — was releasing skin-care products containing extracts from precious stones, we were intrigued. Though the company launched its skin-care line in Italy in 2007, Bulgari Gem Essence products ($50–$320) recently became available stateside, online at Neiman Marcus (as well as 11 select store locations) and slated for Bergdorf Goodman stores in April.

We know how easy it is to resolve to buy heart-healthy items but quickly tire of reading labels under the glare of fluorescent lights in the store. Thankfully, the American Heart Association’s interactive My Grocery List tool helps to create a healthy shopping list so you can stick to it.

When we first heard about Bernie Madoff’s alleged Ponzi scheme, we suspected he might be an empty shell of a man. And once we saw the inside, we realized it was true — at least in the case of the resin My-Mini-Me by ModelWorks figurine called Smash-Me Bernie, which caused quite a stir at Toy Fair 2009, held in New York City last month. For $49.95, you can purchase the Madoff figure — wearing a red devil suit and holding a pitchfork — complete with a golden hammer, for the option of taking out financial frustrations.

Manduka Offers Yoga Mat Recycling Deal

While we love yoga, we’ve always wondered what to do with our old mats. Throwing them into the trash seems to be against the principles of the practice, and we can’t bear to turn a blind third eye to creating additional landfill waste. We’re happy to report that Oregon-based Recycle Your Mat allows you to mail in old mats to be recycled into shoes, flooring — and even other yoga mats.

Moschino Opens Online Boutique

As much as we love heading to a dressing room with an armful of finds, we can’t always find time to visit our favorite shops. So we were excited to learn that Moschino now offers an online boutique to purchase clothes, shoes and accessories from lines such as Moschino, Love Moschino and Moschino Cheap and Chic. Moschino guest editor Amber Le Bon (daughter of Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon and supermodel Yasmin Le Bon) shares and models some of her favorite Moschino looks on the site as well.

We’ve often wondered how we’d hold up in a struggle for survival. Sure, we have a plan in mind for when the burglar alarm goes off in the middle of the night or if someone tries to grab our purse. But what would we really do if put to the test? The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life (Grand Central Publishing, 2009) by Ben Sherwood contains real-life stories of those who have survived traumatic events — a mountain lion attack or a capsized boat, for instance — or battled illness and won.

Green, not bling, was the theme of this year’s Oscar gifting suites, L.A.’s annual pre-awards celeb swagfest. There were no mink eyelash extensions, 24-karat-gold-leaf facials or slingbacks studded with gemstones at the Alive! Lounge at Sofitel LA hotel.

Ever since we heard Neko Case’s haunting, soulful voice — simultaneously tough as nails and smooth as silk — flowing over alt-country rhythms, we’ve been hooked. We also admire the 38-year-old’s fierce protection of her independence, resulting in her turning down major record labels in order to maintain artistic control. Naturally, we’ve been looking forward to today’s release of her sixth album, Middle Cyclone (ANTI-, 2009).

Look Perfectly Plucked With Brow Boost

We called it the “waxident.” One day, in need of a quick brow shaping, we went to a cosmetology school where a student applied wax that was too hot. We had burned strips of skin under our brows, which also were overplucked, making us look constantly surprised. (It didn’t help that when we complained to a co-worker that our face hurt, he said, “It’s killing me, too!” and dissolved into laughter.) Unfortunately, we did not know until recently about Brow Boost.
