As featured in the January/February 2012 issue of VIVmag, for 10 years Lauren Bowles, from HBO’s hot series True Blood, has studied yoga with acclaimed teacher Sara Ivanhoe. Together, the two committed yoginis practice vinyasa flow at both YogaWorks in Santa Monica, CA, and at Bowles’ private home. The element of music infuses their practice.

Ivanhoe explains, “In the yogic system, sound is actually an element, just like earth or fire. It is said to work on the most subtle part of ourselves; the piece that is closest to the soul. That is why music speaks to our soul. More than anything else, we can put on a song and it changes our mood within seconds. Most things we do with our bodies takes minutes to change our state of mind, but putting on your favorite song takes only a few notes.

“I play a variety of rock, world music and yogic chanting mantras while teaching. I don’t focus on the lyrical content of music, as I find that this can often keep us in our heads thinking about the meaning of the words. I play music that gets us out of our heads and into our hearts, out of the thinking mind and into feeling. If I’m doing my job, people walk away from class saying, ‘I just feel so different; I can’t explain it.’”

As featured in the November/December 2010 issue of VIVmag, Kristin McGee introduced a skeptical Tina Fey to the benefits of yoga, as Fey had never really gravitated to the practice prior to their meeting. Together, they did flow yoga to help prepare Fey for her role in the screwball comedy Date Night, and Fey enjoyed it so much, she hired McGee to host a yoga birthday party for her. McGee created a birthday soundtrack for the event. “I played music at Tina’s birthday party because it was just that — a party! I wanted Tina and her girlfriends to have fun and relax, while still getting a great workout. I made a mix of fun songs to move to and thought this music would be the icing on the cake,” McGee explains.

As featured in the July/August 2010 issue of VIVmag, athlete turned yogi Mark Blanchard has practiced for more than 30 years, teaching the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Rachel Griffiths and Jennifer Lopez. Blanchard connected with Lopez on a movie in which she had to perform a yoga sequence, and they have been enjoying downward dogs together ever since. Lopez says yoga changed her life by introducing her to the mind-body-spirit connection that has enhanced her singing, dancing and acting performances. As Blanchard is a purist, there is no music during his classes or private sessions. “Practice to the music of human breath,” he explains. “One of the things Jennifer loves the most about yoga is that it is a time to be peaceful, a chance to listen to the rhythm of life and calm the fluctuations of the mind.” Blanchard and Lopez love music at other times, though, so here are some post-yoga-class favorites.
