ABC’s of Diabetes Prevention

by Rachel Horn

Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death by disease, and it’s no question why — sufferers are two to four times as likely as the general population to develop heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 3 causes of death in America today. Though the numbers are grim, there are several smart ways to reduce your risk of developing diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends the following:

•    Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables (five per day).

•    Choose whole-grain breads, pasta and cereals.

•    Buy fish and lean meats.

•    Purchase nonfat dairy products (skim milk, nonfat yogurt and nonfat cheese).

•    Drink water and avoid sodas and sweetened drinks.

•    Cook with oils low in saturated fat (e.g., olive oil).

•    Watch portion sizes.

•    Exercise for 30 minutes a day, at least five days a week.

It is important to note that your risk for diabetes increases with age, weight gain or inactivity. For more information, log on to www.diabetes.org.
